Wednesday, July 9 - Okay this is a story I started about my friend. I made her the main character coz they I figured I wouldn't have to make up a new name, I'm really bad at that... I'm not really sure what the story is called yet, but this is chapter 1...Chapter 1 ~ Eyes (Maybe 'Eye Contact'... i'm not sure yet) Helani looked up thoughtfully at the canvass. Blank. It was sitting right in front of her, inviting her to paint something, anything on it. Helani thought for a moment. Normally at this point all sorts of things were flying through her mind, pictures of animals, people, amazing views, but nothing seemed special enough. She dabbed her brush in the yellow paint, then slightly in the red, she couldn't make up her mind what color she wanted and where she wanted it. Something was wrong. Helani sat back in her chair, 'what to paint, what to paint' the words echoed through her head. Her gaze slowly moved to out the window, she looked at the people in the park across the road, the children swinging on the swings and riding the merry-go-round. They looked like they were having so much fun, maybe she could paint them? No. Something wasn't right. A girl, about Helani's age suddenly locked her eyes. She was standing in the middle of the playground, just staring. Helani blinked a few times but the girl never looked away. Helani didn't know why she kept looking, everthing about the girl seemed, ordinary. The pair just kept staring, Helani through her big brown giraffe eyes and the girl through her small blue ones. Helani noticed an adult, seemingly male approach the girl from behind. Helani tried to gesture to the girl that someone was behind her but, either helani wasn't very good at it, or the girl took no notice. The man crapt up behind the small child and put his hand around her mouth. The girl didn't seem to acknowledge it, like she didn't know what was happening, or didn't care. Helani's large eyes widened even further in fear. The girl was pulled towards the car park, slowly, very slowly. Helani looked around the playground, surely someone would have noticed the man and his captive, and would soon be coming to her rescue. But noone did. Helani was getting frantic, the girl was being pulled further and further away to the carpark. But it didn't seem right. The girl wasn't struggling, she was letting herself be taken, nobody from the park seemed to care, and the girl never broke her eye contact. It was strange. Helani lept to her feet as the girl was dragged near a dark car. Knocking over her paints helani rushed out the door to try and help the girl. You can't say Helani was fearless, in fact she was so scared if you dropped a toothpick she might scream, the fact of the matter is, she felt like she needed to help the girl. Like the reason the girl was only looking at her was the fact that it was Helani who must save her. When she got to the road outside the art center she checked their was not traffic and started to run across. But she stopped. Helani looked over at the carpark for the girl and the man, she couldn't see them. Straining her eyes she couldn't see any cars in the carpark even resembling the one the girl was being dragged too. Helani's heart started to race, faster than it already was, she looked through the people in the park. They were gone. Helani kicked the ground, she was too late. A call from inside her art classroom "Helani! Get off the road" made Helani jump. She was still standing in the middle of the road. Looking to her right the saw a car, a black BMW in fact closing in on her. Helani tried to run, but her legs felt like jelly, lazy jelly. She couldn't move either direction and the car was fast approaching. Helani heard the screeching of the breaks, it filled her ear drums to capacity. She took a deep breath and stumbled backwards, stumbled, or was seemingly pushed buy the wind from the car. Helani landed just back in the gutter. The car didn't even ask if she was okay, just yelled some profanity about children being allowed near roads as it roared away down the street. Helani scrambled out of the gutter and onto the footpath. Breathing rapidly she was hoisted to her feet by her Art teacher, Mrs Bates. Mrs Bates was a caring woman, she was good at what she did and what she did was teach art, she had been for the last 30 years. She would be almost 50 but didn't look anything like it. Mrs Bates was a round woman, you could tell she cared for all her students and their abilities deeper than she let on, Helani always noticed Mrs Bates taking special interests in her own work. Always there to give guidance and make sure she was okay. This time was barely different. "Helani dear, are you alright? What happened?" she asked as the brushed the loose gravel off helani's clothing. Helani rubbed her hand where she'd scraped it on the road when she fell. "Nothing" she lied "I just, I just..." Helani couldn't finish the sentence, she just what? There was no real answer and therefore nothing really to say. She faded out her answer unsure. Mrs Bates put her arms around Helani and slowly walked with her back into the classroom. "Don't worry dear. It's alright now" Helani sighed and thanked the fact that she was at art class and with Mrs Bates. If something happened like that at school or at home her parents and friends would keep asking questions until they knew everything. She liked the fact that Mrs Bates didn't need to know. Helani sat back down in her chair, and Mrs Bates returned to her desk respectively. The other children were whispering, Helani could tell. She knew they'd seen everything through the huge art windows, but for once in her life Helani didn't try to find out what they were saying. She dipped her brush in the sea blue colored paint and started painting the girl's eyes. THE END. |
